I think its one of those balance issues. After all, there is a price for your choice of using a vampiric weapon(even though there is an easy way out by switching weapons). Just like there is a price to pay for using certain skills(like exhaustion for ele's), there is a price to pay for using certain weapons, be it energy regen or health degen.
Also, you can make use of the Blessing you can get from Grenth's avatar, though the life stealing isn't as strong.
But thats just my two cents

If vamperic weapons shouldn't have a drawback outside of combat, why shouldn't zealous weapons?
/me sides with the majority and doesn't sign
If you don't want the drawback, equip something else in another slot and switch around.
